There is a nice article at http://www.greentechmedia.com/articles/read/Can-a-Disruptive-Solar-Technology-Topple-First-Solar/ discussing the many competing technologies for harvesting energy from the sun. A lot of bets have been placed. Some of those require gallium nitride (GaN), most don't. A very new report of new research results makes GaN look even more interesting for solar cell applications - see http://www.getsolar.com/News/California/Solar-Panels/Breakthrough-Solar-Technology-Could-Double-Cell-Efficiency-19918012 where we find the article: " Breakthrough Solar Technology Could Double Cell Efficiency" and see that the materials play is based on cesium-coated GaN. Very cool!!!
